Wautoma is the governmental center of county of Waushara County.

The town/city comprises of three noncontiguous areas: one is entirely inside the Town of Wautoma, the second is entirely inside the Town of Dakota, and the third straddles the boundary between the two towns.

Wautoma calls itself the "Christmas tree capital of the world". The Kirk Company of Tacoma, Washington, directed the "Wautoma plantation" of more than 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) of Christmas trees, beginning in 1953. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.72 square miles (7.04 km2), of which, 2.68 square miles (6.94 km2) is territory and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water. There were 1,061 housing units at an average density of 395.9 per square mile (152.9/km2).

The ethnic makeup of the town/city was 88.3% White, 1.4% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 6.3% from other competitions, and 2.9% from two or more competitions.

There were 945 homeholds of which 28.7% had kids under the age of 18 residing with them, 32.6% were married couples residing together, 14.4% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 4.6% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 48.5% were non-families.

The median age in the town/city was 35.4 years.

25.3% of inhabitants were under the age of 18; 9.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.2% were from 25 to 44; 22.8% were from 45 to 64; and 17.2% were 65 years of age or older.

There were 806 homeholds out of which 27.2% had kids under the age of 18 residing with them, 37.7% were married couples residing together, 11.0% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 46.7% were non-families.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 23.5% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $31,723, and the median income for a family was $37,500.

About 5.2% of families and 11.5% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 10.7% of those under age 18 and 18.3% of those age 65 or over.

Wautoma is served by the Wautoma Municipal Airport (FAA LID: Y50).

Wautoma High School has won five state championships, three in boys' track and field, one in boys' basketball, and one in football.

In 1980, Wautoma High School won the Class B State Basketball Championship.
